We have filled all of the main crew positions for 2024, and have left the information up for reference.
However, we would be glad to hear from you anytime after April if you are interested in ad-hoc summer work, or if you are interested in joining us for next season and would like to visit the farm this summer.
Second Spring Farm is a small, sustainable vegetable farm in Wheatland, 20 minutes west of Leesburg in between Purcellville and Lovettsville, in a vibrant neighborhood of four different farming operations with several dozen people spread across the various enterprises, making for a dynamic farming community. This is a queer-normative place, and we are looking to hire people who would appreciate working in such an environment. I (David) worked on one of the farms here during and after college and am now going into the tenth season growing vegetables on three acres, having developed a stable, profitable farm business by dialing up the efficiency of scrappy, old-school mechanized systems to grow as many delicious, beautiful vegetables as we can with the least effort. The focus of the summer is our 180-member CSA: picking & prepping vegetables three days a week for packing & delivery the following day, for 60 people each time, nonstop, for 16 weeks late June through early October. This is truly a seasonal farm that follows the cycle of the growing year: the satisfaction of completing each day's work knits into the inevitable progression of the season from excitement over the first squash & onions, to the marathon of tomatoes & melons, to cool-weather greens & winter squash, and finally the celebration of the last CSA day in the beautiful October breeze.
For 2024, now that we’ve got the operation pretty dialed in, longtime fieldwork coordinator Oscar and I have set a goal for next year: to complete our entire streamlined farm season by the time the 16-week CSA ends in early October! We’re aiming to have 100 hours of crew work per week — in the field, at the packing porch, and driving the thrice-weekly delivery route for our CSA customers. This is a great opportunity for anyone with experience who would like to join a team of resilient, efficient, proactive and attentive people working to produce maximum vegetables with minimum effort on a mechanized farm. What we have to offer: $16+/hr, (very) flexible part- or full-time scheduling, stunning vegetables, good vibes, and responsibilities matched to your strengths & interests.
We are also open to connecting with folks with little or no farming experience, especially people who are interested in working around 10hrs/week. This is a good opportunity to participate in bulk fieldwork with the crew, see what it’s like on a vegetable farm, and develop skills & experience for future work.
Farming offers endless possibilities, and I hope that your life can be supported by the farm, as it has supported my own livelihood. There is tremendous flexibility in terms of overall involvement in the generation of the season's farm, and of what aspects of the farm project to be engaged in, nevermind flexibility around hours per week and the period of the season worked. If you think it would be exciting to be a part of this sort of project and would have something to contribute to key elements of the farm, please be in touch. We would be glad to hear from you.

This posting went up on 10/3/23; we filled all of the main crew positions by November but would be glad to hear from you about ad-hoc summer help, or about interest for next season (see the note at the top of the page). Thanks!
